While these two artists take different approaches to electronic music, both tracks on this release traffic in a sense of movement, switching from uptempo beats that evoke dense city environments to dreamlike images of the past, the coast, and urban escapes. “Displaced Voices” introduces Third World Summer, the brand new project of Seattle’s Allan Lumba (Multo). Combining layered vocals with quick beats that recall travels in and out of the city, the track takes Lumba’s favoured themes of distance, melancholy, and nostalgia and works them into a hazy summer track that demands repeat listening. Originally conceptualized as a post-rock project, Love in Athens (Francis Maria Regalado) has been experimenting with a new synthpop sound. Some of the results can be seen in “Old Houses,” a track that merges shimmering synths and strong base frequencies to represent what Regalado describes as “a human pulse in the middle of a heartless urban setting.” “Old Houses” also gives a sense of things to come from Love in Athens, who will be releasing a single, “Pinnacles,” and an EP, Half-awake in [...]

Third World Summer is the new electronic project of Seattle-based artist, Allan Lumba. Created during a year spent in Manila, Third World Summer emerged out of Lumba’s renewed interest in electronic dance music, particularly in the use of repetition in records such as Caribou’s Swim and Four Tet’s There Is Love in You. The resulting project, like the very name Third World Summer, evokes contradictions, combining an oceanic sense of haziness and melancholic distance with uptempo beats that recall the frenetic pace of life in a megacity. Themes such as displacement and nostalgia serve as a bridge between Third World Summer and Lumba’s other persona, the retro-pop inspired Multo, a project he describes as being about writing “concise, stripped-down pop songs.” Under the new moniker, Lumba is able to experiment with less bookended forms of songwriting and, in the process, to explore the more textural aspects of electronic music. As Lumba puts it, quoting a friend paraphrasing Duke Ellington, Third World Summer is about “making songs that end like a new song is about to begin.” Though Third World Summer is designed as a more open-ended project, it also retains Lumba’s unmistakable pop sensibility.
Following his remix of Outerhope’s “The Man with the Pipes,” monome artist Joon Guillen—aka Modulogeek—wrote five other tracks around it, each shifting in mood and key. The result is Pipes and Palindromes, a conceptual EP loosely structured to flow like the score of a musical, with reprises and recurring themes. The EP both builds on and departs from Modulogeek’s previous work.
“Upon Returning/Hallelujah and All Those Things” is the second release under Number Line Records by Allan Lumba, a.k.a. Multo. While representing a bit of a departure from the stripped-down, guitar-based pop of his earlier work, they are similarly characterized by carefully considered words and beguiling tunes. “There really isn’t anything that ties together these two songs, except maybe they are conceptually two of the more ‘hopeful’ themed songs I’ve made,” says Allan. Both songs are taken from his forthcoming first full-length album Dead Stars, which he predicts will be “More lush, layered, somber, drawn-out, and ultimately more nuanced than [debut EP] Footnote to Youth.” Upon Returning / Hallelujah and All Those Things by Multo Download via Mediafire.
